Movement Caliber 3185 → 3186 Since the 16570 first appearance in 1989, the movement for the watch has been the caliber 3185, which is the same caliber used in the Rolex GMT Master II reference 16710.This self-winding movement with independently adjustable hour hands powered the Explorer II 16570 until 2005, when Rolex replaced it with Caliber 3186. Caliber 3186 not only benefited from the then-new blue Parachrom hairspring but also eliminated the slight wobble that the 24-hand of Caliber 3185-powered Explorer II 16570 watches had. The most significant was the upgrade to the caliber 3186 Rolex movement. The GMT hand wiggling was now a thing of the past. There are some 2005 watches with the rehaut with 3185.
A local dealer by me has a 3185 movement one listed for 90 and a 3186 listed for 00. The 3185 was just serviced and I don't know about the 3186 but I know it was serviced when they got the watch so it couldn't have been too long ago. Both watches are in pretty much the same condition.The later Explorer 16570s are equipped with the caliber 3186 which is a GMT movement. Explorer 16570 case. With a diameter of 40mm, and with its relatively slim case size, the watch sits nicely on the wrist.
I believe the 3186 requires less turns of the crown to jump the hour hand. The 3186 had an update around 2015 to make the jumping hour hand mechanism more robust as some early 3186s may have had free wheeling hour hands. The update is also applied at service. Both are great movements.
Any 16570 from 2009 (V serials) or newer will 100% have the cal 3186. If someone is advertising differently, they've most likely swapped out the correct movement. Good luck!
