As you might expect, the new 36 Explorer (reference 124270) from Rolex feels extremely familiar to previous 36mm examples. When we went to shoot this watch we actually brought a 114270 with us so we could directly compare the two watches. So yes, the new Rolex Explorer ref. 124270 has a superior movement. But because of its slimmer and more dramatically tapered bracelet, bigger clasp, and new dial proportions, I’m leaning more toward the older Explorer reference. The proportions of the 114270 are similar to the prior 60+ years of Rolex 36mm watches. The 124270 looks great, but it looks like a modern 39mm Rolex shrunken down to 36mm. Can't go wrong, either way. After having a couple of days to reflect, I still prefer the 124270 to the 114270. While my nostalgic side will miss the charm of the old jangly bracelet, the upgrades are worth it.
The 124270 builds upon the strengths of its predecessors, particularly the Rolex Explorer 114270 and the Rolex 214270. While maintaining the iconic aesthetic that has defined the Explorer line for decades, it incorporates modern enhancements in materials, movement, and overall construction. many people used to say the wider bezel and case/bracelet proportions of the MKII explorer looked bloated.. the 124 uses similar design choices to make a 36mm watch ( technically closer to 35mm ) seem bigger than the specs would suggest.. for me and my 7 inch wrist it makes the watch "just big enough " to pass the wrist test.. none of th.

Place the new model next to one from the late ‘90s, and the average viewer will be hard pressed to tell them apart. A closer look reveals some important differences, however.
